Their discussion of the various interpretations to which the Pinax has been subjected is in- formative ; their points about the genre involved (1 f. : combina- tion of ekphrasis, erotapocritic dialogue, pseudo-Socratic dialogue) are illuminating. Pesce's (henceforth P.) more popular booklet also provides Praechter's text (without app. crit.), translation, brief in- troduction, some exegetical notes, index verborum. Both F.-W. and P. argue against Joly's interpretation') of the Pinax as a Pythagorean allegory and defend the (by now traditional) view that it is an example of the popular and eclectic Cynic philosophy of the early Roman era; successfully, I believe.
