199 sion for the lament' R-W). One expects the reverse, viz. that the la- ment gives the occasion for an encomium. But in the epitaphios speech we find a similar remark, 420,9 'Let the encomia be your raw material for the lamentation'. R-W are silent on this point. Soffel p. 160f. states, perhaps rightly, 'Klägen k6nnen nicht von selbst und um ihrer selbst willen entstehen, sondern sie mussen ein Anlass haben.' The introduction to the translation of Pseudo-Dionysius is marred by confusion about modern editors. Usener and Radermacher jointly edited Dionysius' opuscula rhetorica (BT 1899-1904), but Usener took care of the ars, as he had done in the separate edition of 1895. See vol. 1, p. xxxiii and e.g. the app. crit. on vol. ii, p. 274,15 and 18. Therefore, when Radermacher is men- tioned in R-W's notes read 'Usener' (except in notes 20 (Sylburg), 36 (Schott), and n. 44 had already been suggested by Rabe, see vol. ii, p. xxix). At 262,21f. U.-R. some Greek words have not been translated. At 268,10ft. it seems advisable to note that from this point onwards the theme is no longer the birthday of children (see 266,19), but of adults.
