Abstract

MISCELLANEA PINDAR, NEMEAN XI 48, ONCE MORE In order to refute my objections to his interpretation of Nem. XI 48, made above (Mnemosyne 36 (1983), 153), W. J. Verdenius argues (pp. 153 f.) that there is nothing "quaint" in the omission of Eiaiv, because ellipse of this kind is extremely common. I can agree: in my suggested translation of the line this ellipse is presupposed, and my note on Plato, Phdr. 227 c 4, referred to by V., deals with this phenomenon. But is it "extremely common in all kinds of construction"? Not, in my opinion, in the combination of the verb with a partitive genitive (cp. LSJ II c; K.-G. I 372 f., Schw.-Debr. II 122 f.) Quaint it remains.-The "Pindaric topos", formulated by V., would not be a truism (though Pindar does not always shun truisms). But the subsumption of "passions whose violence exceeds the measure" under "unrealizable desires" would be a very flat one. WOLFHEzE, Duitsekampweg 28c G. J.
