"The truth is that Agathias simply did not think in political terms" (p. 129). "... the indications are that Agathias turned away from real political history not because of any official suppression of criticism but by reason of his own tastes. Here, above all, lies the real difference between Agathias and Procopius" (p. 130). Librum suum eximie concludit C. capite XII (Conclusions), in quo praesertim dilucide locum medium circumscribit quem Agathias obtinet inter Procopium et Theophylactum: "Agathias' History, on the other hand, stands uneasily in an intermediate position, at a stage when Christian affairs still had to be excluded, but when Christian thinking was beginning to be assumed even in the tra- ditional secular historiography" (p. 134/5).
