BOSWINKEL DE NOVIS LIBRIS IUDICIA H. SICHTERMANN, Späte Endymion-Saykophage. Metho- disches zur Interpretation (Deutsche Beiträge zur Alter- tumswissenschaft, 19). Baden-Baden, Bruno Grimm Verlag, 1966. 116 p. 67 figs. Pr. DM 90.-. This little book may be disappointing to the unsuspecting reader, whom the title and the price have led to expect a full treatment of the late Endymion sarcophagi. Only three sarcophagi are discussed (Rome, Palazzo Braschi; London, Br. Mus., Richmond sarcophagus; Tunis, Bardo Mus.), which display a common feature: a disproportionately large central figure, lying in the attitude of Endymion. Especially the ample discussion of the Braschi sarco- phagus is important. The contents of the book, however, show, that the emphasis is on the 'Methodisches zur Interpretation' of the sub-title. S. has no sympathy for those who interpret ancient monuments rather loosely, reading all sorts of modern ideas into them. His own interpretations, conforming to a set of fixed rules, are certainly more scientific. But sometimes an extreme rigidity in adhering to these rules leads to unlikely results. Should the comic actors represented on a terracotta mould (fig. 42, p. 60) be interpreted as attending a funeral banquet, only because one of them holds a garland in his hand, just like the 'Handgirlande' that is often, but not exclusively, found on funeral monuments ? And should the Peleus sarcophagus in the Villa Albani, which does not stick to the rules, therefore be called 'eine nachantike Neuschopfung' (p. 104), even though an account of its discovery in 1722 exists ?
