DE NOVIS LIBRIS IUDICIA L. D. REYNOLDS-N. G. WILSON, Scribes and Scholays. A Guide to the Transmission of Greek and Latin Literature. Oxford University Press, 1968. VIII, 185 p. 16 plates. Pr. sh. 15/-. "This book is designed as a simple introduction for beginners ..." (Preface, p. v). It certainly will serve that purpose, but many established scholars ought to count themselves beginners once more and spend a few delightful hours with this coherent and well-written account of an area that is usually present in snippets only. Within the limited space available the authors have managed to pack an amazing amount of material, well-documented with respect to primary sources. It is regrettable, though understand- able, that it was thought necessary to dispense with footnotes, which would have been a convenient vehicle for referring students to more detailed studies, in particular those that have appeared in various periodicals. When the student learns, for instance, that M. Valerius Probus "has been ... a convenient peg upon which to hang flimsy reconstructions of the early history of a number of texts" (pp. 25 f.), a reference to the most recent full statement of the Probus question would be welcome.
