99 Naturally re-engraving of inscriptions is common enough; but the easiest solution seems to me to be to date the oracle and the coins to the same period and accordingly to interpret the as mountaineers-robbers (and not as pirates from the end of the Republic who have been defeated by P. Servilius Isauricus). As to line 12 oxvc;? ???aT-?Pcav I prefer M.-B.'s rendering, "do not by shrinking from the robbers (not : pirates, H.W.P.) pay a terrible penalty" (the penalty being, of course, the plundering by the x.) to that of R.: "n'allez pas par crainte des pirates subir le chatiment des pirates" (the implication being that, if the Syedreans do not defend themselves against the pirates, they will be lumped together with them, sc. by Isauricus or the Romans in general). R.'s distinction between `chatiment' and 'dommage' is too subtle: the 'dommage', caused by the robbers, is the penalty for Syedra's fear! In the final chapter R. publishes a new honorary inscription from Seleukeia on the Kalykadnos for an athlete. As may be expected from a scholar who for decades has been preparing a study on 'Les concours grecques', the commentary is beyond criticism. Exemplary indices conclude
