G. A. SEECK, Über die Elemente in der liosmologie des Aristoteles. Untersuchungen zu 'De... 89 to the Seventh. The lack of order and unity in these letters is emphasized, as well as the "chameleon personality" of the Plato they reveal. They all are condemned as spurious. In a short review I cannot begin to assess the particular arguments of this book. I simply record my view that its interpretation of the philosophical digression is in every respect implausible, and that its interpretation of the historical narrative contains a number of very dubious assumptions about what the "real" Plato thought and felt. But I recommend scholars to read it and to judge for themselves the weight of its particular arguments. For it has many virtues. Its attack on the Platonic authorship of the Seventh Letter is at once more detailed and more comprehensive than any other I know of. Its notes provide a useful survey of the considerable literature relevant to its subject. And its thesis is vigorously and lucidly argued.
