Commentationes Humanarum... 342 parallel' furnished by the Dutch wrongly connected with fL&Àrt., which rather belongs to Lat. melius (Frisk, Gy. etym. Wtb. II, p. 165) which corresponds to (replaced by the secondary Even if there are no formal objections to an etymology proposed by the author his semantic argumentation is often highly speculative, if not fantastic. Lat. foyttm, which cannot be dis- connected from fonts, is declared to be identical with Gr. ?6poq "tribut, payment", forum being "a l'origine un endroit ouvert ou l'on apportait une contribution" (p. 36); imperium is, with anony- mous polemical rejection of the views expressed by a well-known Dutch scholar, said to be a loan from Greek, viz. ÈfL7tÓPWV. Rome (sic ! ) was, it is argued, occupied by Italo-Greeks between zq.oo and 1200 B.C., the magistrate in charge of the 'factory' was in the eyes of the subjected Romans the authority par excellence, invested with the highest office.
