321 was indeed a well-informed witness on the Pythagorean School, whose doctrines he often treated with a good deal of criticism. As to the fragments, no doubt in Iamblichus' V.P. there is more of Aristoxenus than only the few passages which are cited under his name in Stobaeus. Under "resonances" the author mentions a few passages from 5th century Greek literature; next, she deals with Epicharmus fr. 2, with Damon, the physiologist Hippo and the political theorist Hippodamus of Miletus. On the whole Mrs. T.'s translation is not only correct, but often helpful for understanding a somewhat cryptic text. Only rarely does one feel tempted to propose a slight correction, such as on p. 255 (Iambl. V.P. 84) : "Non unirsi a donna ricca" for xpucrov £xo4ax, which rather means: "a woman wearing gold ornaments". The commentary is succinct but often helpful. UTRECHT, Nieuwe Gracht 79bis C. J.
