Abstract

75 aut aliud tale adds another. It is true that inconcinnity is frequent in Sallust but nowhere else does he lose his grip of the structure of the sentence and the run of the sense, as he does here. Both faults disappear at a stroke if a full stop is read after melius sit, and a comma after stipendi. "..... whether it would be better to cancel my appointment. If you were to send an aristocrat on this or some such other business, of course ..... he would lose his head ....." The structure is now thoroughly Sallustian. Asyndeton summativum (Kfhner-Stegmann, II, 159) frequently follows a verb of saying or thinking with its object or object clause. So frequent is it in this chapter, six times in fact, that Sallust appears to be using it to suggest the provoking tone of Marius' voice. The challenge is often sharpened by the use of the imperative mood, uidete, comparate, in this chapter, considerate in Cat. 51, 26, Hist. I 77, 13; strongly in favour of this interpretation is the run of the sense a little later in this paragraph, 28-9. sed quoniam uostra consilia accusantur, ..... etiam atque etiam reputate, num eorum paenitendum sit. non possum fidei causa imagines neque trium- phos aut consulatus maiorum meorum ostentare, at, si res postulet, hastas, uexillum, phaleras, alia militaria dona ..... For scilicet at the beginning of an apodosis compare Iug. 31, 19. For ut in tanta re, cf. Iug. Io7, 6, ea res, uti in tali negotio, probata. EDINBURGH University DAVID A.
