453 of Asclepios at Epidaurus. An analytical survey of these sanctuaries is added in which we are invited to follow the spectator in his approach to each temple. In the last chapter, the Greek Achievement, the author expounds his final conclusions on such matters as "related volumes" and "space construction". M's treatment of technique and material and of optical refine- ments is clear and relevant, as may be expected from an architect. On the other hand, the archaeologist will find some errors and omissions in this book. For example, on p. 77 the author cites Pausanias' commentary by Frazer in connection with the temple of Apollo at Epidaurus instead of mentioning the 'Apx«io - ÀOY?x? of 1892 where the authentic inscription is published. More regrettable are slips like the following: in his description of temple C at Selinus (pp. 108 and y, Figs. XIII and XIX) the author relies on Hulot's reconstruction of igio while Gabrici's plans in the Mon. Linc. XXXIII of 1930 (Pls. i and 2) show that the entrance to the temenos was near the East front of the temple and not near the South-west corner. MAARN, Ted Visserweg 6 A. V. M. HUBRECHT DE
