Abstract

In this article 1) I shall argue that the author of the Etymologicum Genuinum derived his entry on φώιζειν from Orus’ Περὶ ὀρθογραφίας, and not Herodian’s Περὶ ὀρθογραφίας. Furthermore, I shall attempt to reconstruct the earlier history of the passage: Orus’ Περὶ ὀρθογραφίας drew upon Orus’ Ἀττικῶν λέξεων συναγωγή, which in turn drew upon Phrynichus’ Σοφιστικὴ προπαρασκευή. This second part of the article is admittedly speculative, but, as will be seen, it is not unfounded. The relevant entry of the Etymologicum Genuinum reads as follows: 2) Et. Gen. A (om. B) (unde Et. Sym. codd. CV 3) et EM p. 803,47) 4) φώιζειν: σὺν τῶι ι. σηµαίνει δὲ τὸ καίεσθαι (sic A: καίειν Toup 1790, 193, recte). φώιζειν iota ineffabile per totum hunc locum numquam subscriptum semper adscriptum exhibet A τῶι] τ compendiose A Ζωπύρω περικαιοµένω, sine iota ineffabili, A Lentz assigned the above passage, which he derived from the Etymologicum Magnum (p. 803,47), to Herodian’s Περὶ ὀρθογραφίας II p. 602,26. It is well-known that Herodian’s Περὶ ὀρθογραφίας probably included material on spelling with iota subscript,
