Catullus, A Textual Reappraisal

Catullus, A Textual Reappraisal De novis libris iudicia / D.F.S. Th omson / Mnemosyne 62 (2009) 679-685 679 © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2009 DOI: 10.1163/156852509X340183 Trappes-Lomax, J.M. 2007. Catullus, A Textual Reappraisal . Swansea, Th e Classi- cal Press of Wales. xi, 315 p. Pr. £45.00 (hb). Th e genesis of this work lies in the author’s view, shared with (and, one guesses, possibly inspired by) Professor R.G.M. Nisbet’s infl uential paper (1995. Collected Papers (Oxford), 76-100), founded on the belief that the text of Catullus, conser- vatively edited by R.A.B. Mynors in the Oxford Classical Texts series, ought to be opened more widely to admitting emendatory proposals. At all events, this belief was active in a number of articles published by Trappes-Lomax in the years 2001- 2003, and has now become the leading principle of an important and useful book. An Introduction carefully explains in general terms the underlying foundations of the work; it is followed by a detailed “Schedule of Suggestions” for the improve- ment of the text in “some 450” passages. Th is schedule is set out in three columns: fi rst, Mynors’ reading; next, the preferred reading; and lastly, the source(s) of the proposal in the second http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mnemosyne Brill
