Th e war with Antiochos III of Seleukid Syria often warrants no more than an oblique reference in the story of Roman imperialism and the almost relentless growth to world-empire, particularly following the defeat of Carthage in the Sec- ond Punic War. Th e wars with Rome’s eastern monarchical neighbours (Macedo- nia and Syria) are generally regarded as lesser episodes in this phenomenon when compared to the Herculean struggle with Hannibal. Th erefore, it is refreshing to see here the spotlight fixed on Romano-Syrian relations in the last twenty years of the third century BC, the continuing diplomatic contacts in the first decade of the second century, which finally culminated in war and universal recognition of Rome as senior power in the Mediterranean basin. As such, Grainger’s work is an impor- tant study of Roman foreign policy in the east, especially since, and still unusually alarming, it takes the perspective from the ‘other side’; in this instance from the view- point of Antiochos the Great;
