Salmon Conference in Roman Studies was held in Hamilton, Canada. Upholding a tradition founded by Beryl Rawson, who organised three previous meetings in Australia, ‘the Roman family’ was chosen as the main theme of the symposium, the proceedings of which, edited by Michele George, are under discussion here. Th e preceding volumes, edited or co-edited by Rawson, to whom the present publication is dedicated, are still considered to be 1) seminal for research on Roman family life. Th is volume regards questions con- cerning the definition of the Roman family and those elements of life that are regarded now—and were regarded then—as important, such as marriage patterns, relations between family members and the history of children and childbearing. Th e first two contributions explore the use of the idea ‘family’ in a political and juridical context (S. Treggiari, pp. 9-35) and in the funerary commemoration of freedmen (M. George, pp. 37-66).
