Book Reviews BOOK REVIEWS Africa Jan Coetzee and Johann Graaff (eds.), Reconstruction, Development and People (Johannes- burg : International Thompson Publishing Company, 1996), 401 pp. Paper. This book attempts to bring together in one volume diverse insights pertinent to the field of development studies. A revised and re-titled third edition of two earlier edited collec- tions, this volume echoes the African National Congress (ANC) government's Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) which argues for people-driven development in post- apartheid South Africa. The contributors are based at different institutions within South Africa, most drawn from sociology departments. The collection would undoubtedly be a useful tool to enrich undergraduate students' understanding of the stimulating theoretical concerns and rigorous research practice in this field where many of the effects of the combination of capi- talism and apartheid policies are only beginning to be understood. A theoretical section deals with theories of development as well as with several philosophical and meta-theoretical issues and their connection to research practice. An applied section gives more attention of South African issues. Recent shifts in theoretical debates and political changes are identified as factors necessitating a microscopic approach in development thinking.
