Abstract

150 zations, resources, ideologies, and performances-to reveal new and emerging trends in Indian politics in particular and in social movements in general. In Toward Empowerment, Calman skillfully brings out a variety of contemporary women's issues. The author offers a rich and lucid discussion of the political events of the 1970s. A historical analysis of what existed prior to 1970 in terms of the women's movement (how individual organizations fared in their memberships, resources, activ- ities and political support) would have added to the study. Calman answers the question of why the women's movement emerged in India. The question of how the movement emerged was not within the scope of Calman's study. It is this question of "how" that has been tackled with superb expertise by Basu in Two Faces of Power. In order to capture the intricate details of women's the protests, Basu studies 2 districts (specifically 6 villages) in two states: Maharashtra and West Bengal. She finds two organizations-the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal and Shramik Sangathana in Maharashtra-that reveal two different organizational settings and two different approaches to one single problem. Basu's bottom-up approach allows her to examine the cross-pressures of social identities
