Abstract

352 overlap. Some authors at times dwell on platitudes. The facts presented and discussed are generally well known (at least to specialists). No chapter offers a refreshingly original perception or insight. In the end there emerges no unified theory (Western or otherwise) that accounts for Japan's economic performance during the period under observation. Minor disservices to the readers are the absence of an index and a list of tables and figures. One author is not cited under Notes on the Contributors. A more serious omission, in light of the book's alleged objective, is the absence of a chapter on industrial organization with particular reference to enterprise groups (in finance, manufacturing, and distribution), since there is a growing recognition that these groups' inclination toward risk diversification, long-term mutual assistance and organizational cohesion in lieu of short-term profit maximization and reliance on the classical market has a lot to do with the macro as well as micro performance of the Japanese economy.
