Paul H. B. Godwin (Ed.). The Chinese Defense Establishment: Continuity and Change in the 1980s.... 140 data drawn from printed documents, as well as to give an "insiders" view of the actual function and results of local administrative and economic changes. While he was notably successful in interweaving these various types of data, the use of maps in the book would have been helpful in following some of his discourse. After systematically examining demographic, economic, administrative and educational changes, in a traditionally highly kin-oriented area, Dr. Woon demonstrates the resilience of the patrilineal kinship system in K'ai-p'ing. He suggests that a critical factor in maintaining the dominance of local lineages is the symbiotic relationship between lineages and overseas emigrants. By manipulating the patrilineal network young men received aid from fellow lineage members in their migration to North America. Due to a complex series of factors (for example, hospitable local government towards lineages; inhospitable host country towards Chinese immigrants) these young men, in return, sent remittances back to their families. This money helped modernize and develop the area where they hoped to retire, as well as helped to ensure their own social prestige at home.
