Los Angeles County Museum of Art, distributed by the University of Washington Press, Seattle and London, 1983, 136 pp., $30.00 (paper only). This volume presents ten of the papers delivered at a symposium organized by the Los Angeles County Museum in 1981 to celebrate the exhibit "The Great Bronze Age of China." Appropriately, the first paper is K. C. Chang's discussion of recent theories concerning the origins of the Bronze Age civilization. He summarizes the results of recent excavations and identifies the gaps in Chinese archaeology to suggest how the formation of the civilization may look as the gaps are filled. His distinctions between the various meanings of Shang and Xia-and, by extension, Zhou-should be borne in mind by all scholars.
