In this chronicle of the Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmans, Professor Conlon provides not only a history of the caste but, through the experiences of caste members, opens windows on the social and economic changes that were stimulated by British rule in western India over a span of more than two centuries. In searching even farther back for the medieval origins of the caste, Conlon challenges the common theme of a static traditional society and culture by showing how the group underwent a continuous, often subtle adaptation in institutions and practices. Two major themes illuminate the evolution of the caste, one being the individual quest for rewarding occupations and the other the cultivation of corporate identity. The saga of the Chitrapur Saraswats revolves around the interaction and reconciliation of these two kinds of behavior. Getting and keeping jobs changes the men who fill them, and they in turn influence the identity of the caste itself. What emerges is a portrait of interdependent problem solvers.
