Lund, Studentlitteratur and London, Curzon Press, Scandinavian Institute of Asian Studies, Monograph Series, No. 25, 1976, pp. 93 + 29; 21 plates. This book contains both the Thai poem bapphachd pawat (Pali, pabbajd pavattana) khamklqn (lit., 'the poem of going forth [as a Buddhist monk] by Phra Maha Thyngyyi Varakavinada Bhikkhu (now Mr. Th?ngyQi Saengsinchai) and an English translation of the poem, entitled "A Village Ordination," by Professor Thomas H. Silcock. B. J. Terwiel, an anthropologist who himself served as a Buddhist monk and who has car- ried out field work in Ratburi province, Thailand, has provided and a set of annotated photographs relevant to subject matter of the poem. A foreword by Dr. Thanat Khoman informs us that Phra Maha Thyngyyi was awarded first prize for poetry for this poem in the Second John F. Kennedy Foundation Literary Contest in 1971. Although the bulk of the poem (lines 172-1199 out of a total of 1815 lines) does concern the events surrounding and including the ordination of a young village man (called
