Abstract

269 a personality over time such as that described in William Hinton's pre-libera- tion classic Fanshen. That is the way to gain insight into the massive social revolution which is still occurring in China. Macciocchi's account has been quickly dated by China's shifting sand political hierarchy. Of the Polit Bureau members she sighted at a ping-pong match in celebration of Italy's diplomatic recognition of the People's Republic of China, many have been dismissed from power. Her quoting Lin Piao was superceded within the year by his precipitous fall. Deputy Macciocchi concludes with a chapter which attempts to put Maoist Marxism in a interpretive perspective. Lambasting the Soviet brand of Marxism she draws on Marcuse and Gramsci in an analysis that seems, at best, peripheral. In sum, this is a readable, broad-brush, impressionistic travelogue, one of many in the recent period of "normalization." Pacific and Asian Affairs Council Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A.
