These two motifs unify this collection of essays and make this book provocative, essential reading for all those anthropologists, eco- nomists, historians, sociologists, and others who fancy themselves Indianists. It should also be read, although it probably won't be, by those academic cosmo- politanites who make their careers and fortunes by rendering sage advice to the Indian government and by those Indian policy-forgers who have perhaps drift- ed too far from their rural roots. An introduction by the editor, K. Ishwaran, and a prologue by S. N. Eisen- stadt set the stage for the ten village analyses that make up the body of the book. Ishwaran's essay is a masterful statement of where we now stand as regards the conceptualization of change in village India.
