It consists of five parts: PART I An Island People; PART II The Building of a Kingdom; PART III Passing of Old Japan; PART IV Japan: The Modern Empire; and PART V The Making of a New Japan. The book includes informative introductions to each part and more than forty excerpts from books and articles which discuss or describe various subjects, such as the economy of Japan, society, history, politics, art and others. Each excerpt is proceded by an annotation by Prof. Hyman Kublin which helps readers in getting a better perspective of the subject. The editor, Hyman Kublin, is a well-known scholar in the East Asian area. Besides this book, he has to his credit several books and many articles on East Asian history. His profound knowledge in the field is reflected not only in the thoughtful annotations but also in the choice of the selected readings. PART I of the book is a general introduction to Japan.
