It is not very enlightening to encapsulate the problems of Africa by repeatedly restating that the achievement of national unity and sustained economic growth is very difficult! Many of these criticisms can be traced to the overemphasis in this volume on the "diversity" of Africa. Granted there has been a tendency to view the "dark continent" as a uniform entity. But surely there is no longer a need to stress the enormous social, cultural, economic and political variety of the continent to the point where it impedes the identification and analysis of more general problems, patterns and processes. This is particularly disconcerting when the major theme is modernization, a complex and multivariate set of interrelated processes of change which has become an important focus of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences in large part because of its recognizable regularities throughout the developing world.
