H. L. Roth, Great Benin : Its Customs, Art and Horrors. London, Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1968,... Of all the books about Benin which were written in the early part of the present century, Ling Roth's Great Benin remains one of the most valuable. The original edition was limited to 320 copies, and is now a great rarity. Messrs. Routledge and Kegan Paul are to be congratulated, not simply on making this important book freely available once again, but also on the high quality of their reprint. Many of the photographs in the original edition were of rather poor quality-some of them were taken in Benin at the time of the Punitive Expedition in 1897-and naturally they are no better in the reprint. All the photographic illustrations have lost a little contrast and detail, but are far closer to the original than are the illustrations in the reprints of two other classics on Benin which were recently published in America. The line drawings are as good as in the original-if anything, a little more contrasty, perhaps because the reprint is on a less creamy paper than the original, though the texture of the paper is very similar. In short, we have a reprint which comes close to being a facsimile of the original.
