With Th e British Empire: Th emes and Perspectives Sarah Stockwell has done a great service to both students and scholars. In a dozen thematically organized chapters, this volume supplies readers with evenhanded syntheses of forbid- dingly vast and insular historiographies. While, as will be discussed below, some quibbles may be raised regarding a few of the contributions, the fi rst thing to be noted about this volume is that, by taking a strong editorial hand, Stockwell has not only managed to get the most out of a group of highly competent scholars, she has also produced a remarkably consistent and integrated treatment of a vast historical subject. Stepping into highly contested historiographical terrains, each of the essays succeeds in presenting a judicious overview of the contemporary consensus (and debate). Th e result is both praiseworthy and admirable.
