Th ese have been fi rst, the turn to local history, and second, the growing inclination, under the infl uence of postmodern liter- ary analysis, of approaching the content of texts as a matter of subjective discourses rather than as sources of objective data. Th e four papers in this special issue of JESHO each develop aspects of these trends and point the way to new perspectives on Middle-Period Chinese history. 1 Th ey each present a case study of sources for local history and analyze their frag- mented discourses.
