ISBN: 87-91114-49-7 In Nature and Nation Jeyamalar Kathirithamby-Wells traces the history of human influence on the forests of Peninsular Malaysia, and focuses in par- ticular on the impact of the development of the state on the forests. Con- versely, the omnipresence of the woodlands has helped to give the Malaysian nation its present shape. Th e analysis takes the reader from the eighteenth into the twenty-first century. Th e book was one of the three monographs nominated for the International Convention of Asian Scholars Book Prize for Humanities 2007. Although the prize was ultimately not awarded to this book, Nature and Nation is beyond doubt an outstanding piece of scholarship. Th e book starts with a very clear “introductory course” on the ecology of the rainforest. Th e Malays and aboriginal inhabitants ( orang asli ) felt closely connected to the forests, which were used in many different economic ways.
