The current work of Richard Blackburn is, as indicated by the title, a study of the mem- oir of an Arabic shari fi an agent who, having been chosen by the rulers of Mecca and Medina to head a diplomatic mission to the Ottoman court, was sent to Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire in 1557-58. The book consists of an annotated translation of the memoir “ al-Faw®id al-san¬yah fi al-rihlah al-Madan¬yah wa al-R‚m¬yah ” (Splendid Rewards from Travel to Medina and Turkey) written by this agent Qutb al-D¬n Muhammed in Arabic.
