The Islamic laws of ritual purity ( ã ah § rah ) have not until recently attracted much focused attention from Western scholars, despite their obvious importance both for the Islamic legal tradition from its beginnings and for millions of individual practicing Muslims historically as well as today. That is now changing. In the wake of a seminal 1991 article by A. Kevin Reinhart, the literature has been enriched by a major monograph from Marion Katz and a series of articles by Ze’ev Maghen, in addition to a recent detailed assessment of the contributions of all three of these scholars by Richard Gauvain in the pages of this journal. Now Maghen has produced a monograph, concentrating on one important aspect of the Islamic purity system, that dealing with relations between the sexes. More specifically, Maghen’s book is about the classical Sunn Ê fiqh of purity http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Islamic Law and Society Brill
