Pp. xx + 312. ISBN 90 04 11628 1. $ 95.00 This is a heavily revised version of BrockoppÕs doctoral dissertation (Yale, 1995). In Chapter One, Brockopp introduces the Egyptian M¨lik jurist ®Abd All¨h b. ®Abd al-¼akam (d. Old Cairo, 214/829), who seems to have transmitted directly from M¨lik and is reputed to have become head of the local M¨lik school on the death of Ashhab in 204/820. Brockopp argues that precisely because Ibn ®Abd al-¼akam never became the eponymous founder of a school, the biographical information about him is relatively free of the retrospective glorification and false attribution that so complicate the biographies of better- known figures, such as M¨lik and Sh¨fi®Â. Brockopp then sketches the history of Ibn ®Abd al-¼akamÕs three epitomes of M¨lik law, subject of multiple commentaries and reworkings over the next three centuries.
