This volume is a revised version of Brian Schultz’s Bar Ilan dissertation, which he completed under the guidance of Hanan Eshel (ז"ל). Schultz concentrates on several topics within his work; however, his primary focus remains the issue of internal coherence within the War Scroll (M)—a theme that he considers to be essential for understanding the document. He organizes his work into seven chapters: the first two are introductory (“Discovery and Identification”; “Outlining the War Scroll ”); the next three deal with the text of M directly; the sixth compares M and the Rule of the Congregation (Sa); and the seventh provides a summary of his entire study. Schultz begins his analysis in Chapter Three with a close reading of col. 1. The central problem that he engages is the apparent lack of coherence between the narratives in cols. 1 and 2. His premise is that M must be read on its own as a coherent work—even if it is the product of redaction (86).
