THE LITERARY CHARACTER OF 4QTANHUMIM JESPER H Ø GENHAVEN Copenhagen 4QTanhumim (4Q176) was published by John M. Allegro in DJD 5 in 1968. 1 The document, of which substantial portions have survived (by Cave 4 standards), is not easily classi fi ed with regard to its liter- ary genre. Since a signi fi cant part of the preserved text can be identi fi ed as passages well known to us from the Book of Isaiah it has become customary to view 4Q176 within the orbit of the exegetical literature from Qumran. 2 As is the case for a signi fi cant number of the Qumran texts that were published at a relatively early date, scholarly interest in 4QTanhumim has been rather limited, and the secondary literature dealing directly with this document is scant. Since it is possible today, in the light of the publication of the entire Qumran corpus, to view the earlier published texts in a different perspective and against a broader background, a renewed examination of 4Q176 might prove worthwhile. This paper attempts, on the basis of a re- examination of the text of 4Q176, an assessment of the structure and literary character of the document.
