GEN 24:14 AND MARITAL LAW IN 4Q271 3: EXEGETICAL ASPECTS AND IMPLICATIONS DAVID ROTHSTEIN Beth Shemesh, Israel The regulations concerning matrimony and divorce at Qumran have been the subject of much scholarly debate. In a recent study of 4Q271 3, A. Shemesh has argued that the Qumran community viewed the marital bond in ontological terms; hence, sexual congress alone suf fi ces in effecting marriage, a position also attested in rabbinic lit- erature and, possibly, New Testament sources. 1 On this view, so it is argued, the sect interpreted the anomalous passage at Deut 22:13 – 21, 2 which prescribes execution for a newly-wed wife found to have engaged in pre-marital sex, as re fl ecting the fact that the maiden’s pre- sent marriage is, by de fi nition, an act of adultery toward her previous 1 For recent discussion of Paul’s view of the marital bond and, speci fi cally, the posi- tion that Paul’s stance does not, in fact, re fl ect an ontological approach, see Y.M.
