1 The document, initially labeled Sapiential Work A, has been arranged on the basis of ve signi cant manuscripts from Cave 4 (4Q415 – 418, 4Q423), three smaller frag- ments whose place in the document have not been determined (4Q418a – c), and a cor- responding copy from Cave 1 (1Q26). On the grouping of the fragments, see T. Elgvin, ÒThe Reconstruction of Sapiential Work A,Ó RevQ 16 (1995) 559 – 80; J. Strugnell and D.J. Harrington (eds), Qumran Cave 4.XXIV: 4QInstruction (Musar leMevin): 4Q415ff. (DJD 34; Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1999) 17 – 20. In referring to the various fragments, I will follow the designations that follow their most recent arrangement, as applied by Strugnell and Harrington in the DJD edition. Although certain relevant parts of the 4Q416 and 4Q417 manuscripts contain overlapping content, I shall for the sake of easier reference tend to cite the text from 4Q417, as published by Strugnell and Harrington. The form of the document is one of a moralizing set of instructions to an individ- ual addressed as a Ò ,Ó not to be rendered as a ÒmavenÓ in the wordÕs Yiddish sense, but more accurately Òone who understands,Ó i.e.
