Saldarini's interesting and important study of the Gospel according g to Matthew argues with vigour and in detail the following thesis: the Matthaean group and its spokesman were Jewish believers in Jesus who sought to convince other Jews of the truth of their commitments, in spite of their repudiation and exclusion by the majority of Jews, especially the early rabbinic leaders. Using general categories from social anthropology, Saldarini pictures the Matthaean movement as a deviant Jewish group which wished to become dominant in the period after the destruction of the temple.
