In an energetic response to Black British pleas to be given funds to "go home," Germaine Greer, an expatriate herself, argued that there is no such place as home and that we are all exiles. Greer here expresses one of the key perceptions of early Christianity. Our "home" is not in heaven, but is rather to be found in our common humanness, in what we share with "the Human One." At the same time history and culture are irreducibly particular, and different cultures have produced very different analyses of, and responses to, the human condition. Any adequate Christology has to come to terms with both of these perspectives. For the past twenty-five years discussion of inter-faith dialogue has been stuck in the sterile paradigms of the so-called "exclusivist, inclusivist, pluralist" approaches to other faiths. This is advocated by a ruling liberal orthodoxy which speaks the same language whether based in Seoul, Toron- to, Madras or California.
