By David G. Horrell. London: T & T Clark, 2005. Pp. xvi + 339. This is a fascinating book. It is well argued and written in a way that engages the reader. I enjoyed reading it, from beginning till end. The genre is not easily defined, but, as the subtitle indicates, it presents a refreshing contemporary perspective. Furthermore, this is not a traditional discussion of Paul’s ethics. Anyone expecting traditional topics to be addressed will be disappointed. Horrell concentrates on the theological substructures which shaped Paul’s ethics. Hence he very much synthesizes Pauline theology and ethics. From that perspective, however, one still wonders why the role of the Spirit and that of eschatology are almost absent in the presentation. His aim is to write “exegetically serious and detailed” (1) on Paul’s ethics, and simultaneously “to outline some possibilities for the ways in which Paul’s ethics might shape our ways of doing ethics today” (1).
