Ephesians: Empowerment to Walk in Love for the Unity of All in Christ

Ephesians: Empowerment to Walk in Love for the Unity of All in Christ Book Reviews / Biblical Interpretation 16 (2008) 302-306 305 © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2008 DOI: 10.1163/156851508X28 719 Ephesians: Empowerment to Walk in Love for the Unity of All in Christ . By John Paul Heil. Atlanta, Society of Biblical Literature, 2007. Pp. xi + 357. This volume in the Society of Biblical Literature Studies in Biblical Literature series is mainly concerned with the literary structure of Ephesians. John Paul Heil argues that Ephesians reveals a macrochiastic pattern comprised of fifteen units, which likewise contain their own microchiastic patterns. According to Heil, this structure serves “as a key to understanding what and how Paul, the implied author of the letter to the Ephe sians, is communicating to his implied audience” (1). The study begins with a brief introduction (111), including an engaging explana tion of the themes contained in the title of the work (the theme of love is especially significant), followed by discussion of authorship, audience, and method. Questions of authorship are only tangentially significant for the study, but nevertheless, Heil sit uates himself “with those scholars [e.g., Harold W. Hoehner; Peter Thomas O’Brien] who have recently studied the issue of the authorship of Ephesians most thoroughly http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Biblical Interpretation Brill
