Letter to the Editor I was pleased to see Chris Kaplonski’s review ( Inner Asia vol.1, no.1) of my Historical Dictionary of Mongolia, published some four years ago. The book was Number 19 of an on-going series of historical dictionaries of similar content and format. My contract with the Scarecrow Press was signed in June 1988 for delivery of the text in July 1992. Much of the fi rst 18 months’ work was abandoned following the emergence of democracy in Mongolia, which generated many important new current developments, and also the need to ac- count for the re-evaluation of some historical events and personalities already in draft. Because of this, and the pressure of work at SOAS in 1991/92, I was unable to complete the text on schedule. In view of the 1992 constitution and elections in Mongolia it was agreed to extend the delivery deadline by a year, updating the chronology and time-sensitive material. Meanwhile, the series editor moved house from the US to the French Alps, creating a new ‘triangular’ dimension to the long-distance editorial process of checks, amendments and cuts to the text, which was growing too long. It became necessary to exclude some categories
