Exactly 60 years ago Mary Franklin (1951) presented the first monograph of cyst-forming nematodes, at that time a total of only ten known species in a single genus, Heterodera . Since then, a large number of additional species has been described, their descriptions often not easily accessible (or readable), and the number of ge- nera with species considered as cyst-forming increased to seven, currently recognised in the subfamily Heteroderi- nae, while nine genera of non-cyst-forming (‘cystoid’) Heteroderidae are grouped in the subfamilies Meloido- derinae and Ataloderinae.
