This book collects twenty-two papers delivered during the International Conference on the History of Alchemy and Chymistry (Philadelphia, 2006), which was organised by the Chemical Heritage Foundation under the chairmanship of Lawrence M. Prin- cipe, who also edited these proceedings. From the collection it emerges at once that in the early modern period, chymistry was seen as a promising discipline in the sense that numerous improvements or bene- fits could be obtained from its knowledge. Didier Kahn describes how the patronage of kings and other political authorities made a difference in the life of chymists. The French King Henry IV’s patronage allowed Paracelsian iatro-chemists not only to resist the Parisian Faculty of medicine’s rejection of Paracelsianism, but also to take a political position.
