As contemporary society has engaged in discussions about sexual violence, torture, and other forms of abuse, a growing number of biblical scholars have turned their attention to these phenomena in the ancient world and scripture. is essay explores two recent, noteworthy contributions to this conversation. With Eyes of Flesh: e Bible, Gender and Human Rights is Carole Fontaine’s deeply personal and political protest against violence perpetrated upon victims’ bodies. While several chapters were published prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the book itself was prompted by Fontaine’s outrage over the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse that came to light in 2004. Her concern for contemporary abuses sent her searching for Ancient Near Eastern parallels. Fontaine juxtaposes modern accounts of rape, torture, and honor killings against their ancient counterparts.
