In Garry Rodan's The Political Economy of Singapore's Industrialisation: National State and International Capital, he suggests that there is an urgent need for "... close empirical and theoretical examination ..." of the export oriented industrialisation (EOI) strategy that has so successfully incorporated Singapore's economy into what has now been termed in the literature as the New International Division of Labour (NIDL). NIDL refers to the decomposition of production processes made possible by advances in production technology which has facilitated global optimisation in the allocation of the factors of production in the process known as 'worldwide sourcing'. Using Singapore's case, Rodan wants to evaluate the transferability of the EOI strategy, which has been so successfully adopted by the newly industrialised countries' (NICs), to other developing nations; and to investigate the limits and limitations of continued economic growth within the NIDL. The main argument is that the Singaporean state has played an instrumental role in creating Singapore's "comparative advantage" vis-a-vis the profit interests of highly mobile international capital, i.e. the multi- . national corporations (MNCs).
