QUANTITIES OF WATER PUMPED BY MUSSELS (MYTILUS EDULIS) AND COCKLES (CARDIUM EDULE) by J. WILLEMSEN (Zoological Station, Den Helder) 1. INTRODUCTION From the viewpoint of feeding and respiration of the animals them- selves and also from that of water purification it is of importance to know the quantities of water pumped by bivalve molluscs. They have been measured for oysters and mussels. In connection with other in- vestigations carried out by the Zoological Station it was of interest to determine them also for the cockle. This paper gives the results of some measurements for the latter, together with new figures for the mussel. The quantity of water pumped has been determined for bivalves in two ways: i . after a direct method, whereby the water from the exhalation siphon was collected and its volume measured; 2. according to an indirect method, whereby the animals were given the opportunity to clear suspensions, and the decrease in suspended matter was used to calculate the volume of water pumped. It should at once be added that the direct method in the hands of such investigators as GALTSOFF c.s. and LOOSANOFF and co-workers is able to give constant figures even over rather
