Our first article is ‘Stipulation of Excess in Understanding and Misunderstanding Riba : Th e Al-Jassas Link’, con- tributed by Dr Mohammad Omar Farooq, an Associate Professor of Eco- nomics and Finance, Upper Iowa University. Th is well researched piece looks at the orthodox definition of Riba , tracing it back to Al-Jassas, and reviewing the foundation. It questions the accepted belief that Riba has always included stipulated excess as an essential condition. Th is article has very useful references, textual notation, and quotes and is a welcome con- tribution to this ever present and topical subject. Th e impact of Riba is widespread, and has many comparative elements. Our second article is ‘Islamic Contracts in a Secular Court Setting? Les- sons from Malaysia’. Th is is contributed by Ahmad Hidayat Buang, of the Department of Sharia and Law, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya. It is based on a paper presented at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London, in 2006. Th e talk and consequent paper illustrated the judgment http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Arab Law Quarterly Brill
