Such an identification would demand an enormous investment of time as well as specialised scholarship', stated the editors of the auction catalogue of Franciscus Gomarus a few years ago.' In this exemplary edition ofPufendorf's auction catalogue Fiam- metta Palladini demonstrates just how rewarding such an investment can be. Her magnificent book is invaluable not only to specialists ofPufendorf, or of the history of books and publishing, but to all those interested in intellectual and cultural history. After two prefaces, one in German and one in Italian, Fiammetta Pal- ladini (henceforth FP) gives us one of the most important parts of the book, her very learned and closely reasoned Introduzione (XI-LXI).
